On-Hire and Off-Hire Surveys are critical when a vessel is delivered into or returned from charter. At SCQ Offshore, we provide independent condition verification at both delivery (on-hire) and redelivery (off-hire), documenting the vessel’s state to protect the interests of both owners and charterers.
Our on-hire surveys are carried out at the commencement of a charter to establish an accurate and independent record of the vessel’s condition, equipment status, and operational readiness at the time of delivery. The survey provides a clear benchmark against which the vessel’s condition can be assessed at redelivery, protecting the interests of both owners and charterers and reducing the risk of disputes during or after the charter period.
The scope of an on-hire survey typically includes inspection of the hull, decks, superstructure, cargo spaces where accessible, machinery and propulsion systems, deck equipment, safety and lifesaving appliances, and accommodation areas. The vessel’s general condition, cleanliness, and apparent maintenance standard are recorded, along with the status of key systems relevant to the intended service.
All findings are documented through detailed written observations and comprehensive photographic evidence, providing an objective record of the vessel’s condition at the time of handover. Any existing defects, deficiencies, or areas of concern are clearly noted to ensure transparency and to avoid ambiguity regarding responsibility during the charter period.
Where requested by the client, a bunker survey is usually carried out in conjunction with the on-hire survey to verify fuel quantities on board at the time of delivery. Bunker measurements and calculations are recorded and included within the survey documentation, providing an agreed reference for commercial and operational purposes.
